Here’s a bit of trivia you probably did not know – the word “vandalism” is derived from the word “Vandals” and this was a tribe from East Germany in the 5th century that entered into the Roman Empire. They are best remembered for bringing Rome to her knees in 455. The Vandals were not in essence more destructive than other warring tribes, but due to the fact that Rome was held in such high esteem by other European cultures, this tribe became associated with wanton, senseless destruction and those seeking to destroy beautiful objects and works that had been created with great labor and were treated with veneration.
