Compare Sonitrol Alarm Security Systems vs. ADT Home Security

ADT and Sonitrol are two of the most storied names in the American home security business. Both have been in business for decades, with ADT dating as far back as the late 1800's. While both companies took different paths to get where they are, both are now leaders in security system technologies.

ADT started out in 1874 when 57 telegraph delivery companies combined to form a larger corporation. Later in the war years of World War One and Two ADT started to makes its preliminary entry into the security market mainly through its work designing security systems for the government.

In the early 1970's ADT invented its first in home security system called Central Station, a derivative of the Customer Monitoring Center they now use today. By the 1980's ADT was a publicly held company that offered 24/7 monitoring for customers all across the United States.

Sonitrol was not originally a security system company. It started out as a company in the 1950's that offered microphone installation to detect invaders of a different kind - mainly insects. Robert Baxter of Anderson, Indiana would use microphones installed in walls to detect bugs like termites and pinpoint their exact location.

In 1963, Mr. Baxter was hired by a local law enforcement agency to develop alarm technology for police departments. Out of that fruitful union grew a company that now offers a wide array of security services to customers across the country.

It is obvious to see that both Sonitrol and ADT have long and varied histories that have led them both to a premiere place in the home security market. Their histories have granted them varied strengths, but there is no doubt that both of them have earned their elevated position in their respective fields.
